History of Kickboxing
The sport of kickboxing is an ancient form of fighting derived from other striking based fighting systems from China and India and later moved to Thailand where it became known as Muay Thai. Muay Thai is a deadly form of kickboxing famous around the world for their use of elbows, knees, and leg kicks. Muay Thai moved to Holand and the U.S. in the early 1900’s and began to change in those areas. Europe, especially Holand developed a different form of Muay Thai Kickboxing which was much more agressive with western style boxing and kicks to the body and head. The U.S. developed full-contact Karate and American Kickboxing in the 1960’s and 70’s made famous by people like Bill Wallace, Benny “The Jet”, and Chuck Norris. This form of kickboxing used a lot of upper body strikes and tended to avoid the famous Thai leg kicks. The American kickboxing also utilized a lot of the karate punching from Shotokan and Kyokushin styles.
Nowadays Kickboxing has turned into Cardio Kickboxing, competition kickboxing, self defense kickboxing, etc. These art forms have developed from the Dutch kickboxing, Thai kickboxing, and American kickboxing forms and has become one of the greatest physical fitness workouts and self defense systems in the world.
